Standard Form ×
ax² + bx + c = 0,  a ≠ 0
Every quadratic can be written in standard form, where a, b and c are constants and a ≠ 0.
Example 1 ×
Solve 2x² − 3x − 5 = 0 using the formula.
1. a = 2, b = −3, c = −5  ·  2. Δ = 9 + 40 = 49
3. x = (3 ± 7) / 4  →  x = 5/2 or x = −1
Common Mistakes ×
• Forgetting the ± — always consider both roots
• Sign errors reading off b (−5, not +5)
• Vertex x-coordinate is h = −b/2a, not b/2a
